An international cricketer and Juris Doctor candidate has been charged with child sexual offending.
Nivin Sathyajith, 23, faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday accused of “serious offending against a child” in February 2023.
Mr Sathyajith, who spruiks himself as a “semi-pro cricketer”, previously played for Cranbourne Cricket Club and Victorian Premier Cricket with the Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club where he distinguished himself as a rising star in the sport.
In 2022 he was named Most Valuable Player and Best Batsman of the Victorian Sunday Cricket Association competition before heading to the UK where he played professionally for Preston Cricket Club in Hertfordshire.
The former Clyde North man appeared via video link from Queensland, telling the court he had moved to Darra, a southwestern suburb of Brisbane to work in a “graduate position”.
It is understood Mr Sathyajith, who studied a Juris Doctor – a Doctor of Law – at Monash University in 2023 has been working for Queensland Rail as an accountant since February 2024.
Magistrate Donna Bakos expressed surprise at the accused child abuser’s interstate move while he was facing serious charges in Victoria.
The Director of Public Prosecutions told the court Friday was the first time the prosecution had been made aware of the move.
The court heard Mr Sathyajith had been on summons since he was charged, meaning he did not need to come to court in person.
The DPP moved to place Mr Sathyajith on bail, which Ms Bakos agreed to – telling the cricketer that he was now required to appear in person at court and would have to travel from Brisbane.
