The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A Healesville mother has appeared in court after being charged over a fatal crash that killed a well-loved ballet teacher and CFA volunteer in February.

Butcher shop assistant Monica Kellalea, 37, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link from prison on Tuesday.

The prosecution withdrew several charges during the brief hearing before the mother of two indicated she would plead to one charge of culpable driving causing death.

Police had earlier alleged the crash two-vehicle collision occurred on the Melba Highway, at Murrindindi, about 5pm on February 6 this year.

Belgrave South woman, Melinda ‘Min’ Gordon-Addison, had been driving home from Myrtleford after a “wonderful weekend away” with her motorcycle club when the crash occurred.

The “full and rich life” the 57-year-old lived ended instantly.

During her funeral she was remembered as a vibrant and passionate woman who was involved in an array of community groups and organisations — she was a performer and dancer, ballet teacher and a non-operational member at Belgrave Heights and South CFA brigades for 23 years.

She held a black belt in karate and loved cars and animals.

Kellalea has been in custody since she was charged on April 19 and did not apply for bail on Tuesday.

Her plea will be heard in the County Court in November.
