The quiet streets of Maroondah ae becoming clogged with cars as locals claim overdevelopment is stopping them from parking outside their own homes.

Readers took to Maroondah Leader’s Facebook page to share their most-loathed parking bottlenecks in the region, with several streets in the booming Ringwood activity centre raised as problem spots.

They include Bourke St, Barkly St, New St and Canterbury Ct.

Of those listed, only homeowners in Bourke and New streets can apply for a residential parking permit, with apartment, townhouse and unit owners ineligible unless they write to the council for special consideration.

Hilary Symons wrote: “Too many apartments being built in small streets! Bourke St is shocking, basically a one lane street now because of all the parked cars.
“Council is causing overpopulation in areas that can’t cope with it.”

The feedback came after Arcacia Ct resident Kaylor Maclean spoke out about her ongoing fight to get a parking permit from the council.

Ms Maclean said she had been fined for trying to park outside her own house in the court, which has a two-hour parking limit.

She said she couldn’t park in her driveway because of her partner’s van, and the street was constantly getting clogged with other residents and visitors checking out the nearby Mullum Mullum Creek trail.

Ms Maclean said she had been contacting the council for nine months about the issues and to request a parking permit, but with no success.

She also claimed garbage trucks had been unable to collect her rubbish on six occasions as they were unable to get down the street.

According to the council’s website, Arcadia Ct residents living in houses are entitled to a on-street parking permit.

“It’s the least I’m asking to show I’m a resident so I can park my car in my court, but instead I get told it’s my fault,” she said.

“They’re just shovelling me around and not dealing with the problem.”

Other readers identified issues in streets including Surrey Road East in Croydon, Maidstone Street and Canterbury Ct in Ringwood, and Bondi St in Ringwood East.

Megz Zwart wrote: “Armstrong Rd Heathmont at school pick up and drop off is a nightmare”, while Anita Trembath said the parking situation was dire in Highfield Ave in Warranwood, with cars parking in bus stops.

A parking permit system does not operate in any of the six streets.

The council did not respond to questions by deadline.
