Maroondah Council has defended its decision to shut one of its pools during summer to complete $250,000 worth of repairs.
The aquatic facilities at Croydon’s Aquahub, including its 25m indoor pool, closed on December 15 for “programmed maintenance works”, including repairs to the scum gutters and balance tanks.
Workers are also replacing timber panels in the sauna and doing other general safety and maintenance upgrades.
Mayor Mike Symon said it was industry practice to carry out the repairs so that the pool and sauna could serve users into the future.

Cr Symon said the repairs couldn’t be completed while the pool was in use and the council had programmed them at its quietest time of the year.
“We have programmed all maintenance works to occur at one time to minimise disruption to users,” he said.
“The December-January period is the quietest time of the year for the pool, as there is less programmed activities such as the learn to swim classes.”
Cr Symon said locals keen for a swim could visit the outdoor Croydon Memorial Pool on Hewish Rd while Aquahub was closed.
He said the works would be funded in the council’s annual renewal and maintenance budget and were on track to be completed by Australia Day.
