Children were napping and had a lucky escape when scaffolding crashed into the play area of a Croydon childcare centre.

Worksafe is investigating the December 30 early afternoon incident at Platypus Junction Childcare Centre.

About 45 children and staff were inside the centre due to hot weather and no one was injured.

Centre owner Dale Pearce said the scaffolding came into the play area from a building site next door where a double-storey block of units was being built.

Mr Pearce said site workers removed the scaffolding and the centre was operating as normal.

He said he would ask for certification from an independent building surveyor to ensure the safety of centre users and prevent similar incidents in the future.

“The children were asleep at the time, and everyone was extraordinarily lucky,” he said.

Mr Pearce said he was unsure how the incident occurred and there was no major damage to the centre, expect for an outside table, which would be replaced.
