A number of significant Lilydale buildings, including two popular pubs, could win heritage protection under a new plan being considered by Yarra Ranges Council.

While preparing a new Lilydale Structure Plan, the council found there are a number of properties in the town with potential heritage significance that are not protected by a heritage overlay in the planning scheme.

Heritage consultants have recommended the protection of 13 new sites and updates to the existing heritage statements for seven places already protected by the overlay.

The council is looking to amend the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme to apply the heritage overlay to the following places: Olinda Hotel, Former Hutchinson’s Store, Crown Hotel, Beresford Buildings, Artis Building, a single storey shop at 295 Main Street, Former Deschamps Wine Store Olive Tree, Lilydale First World War Memorial, Willowbank, Towri, Heatherlie, Lilydale Primary School No. 876 and the Lilydale Heritage Railway Station Goods Shed.

“Heritage protection enables historically and culturally significant places to be protected for the benefit of current and future generations by adding to the understanding of Yarra Ranges’ rich cultural history, providing a link to the past and giving a sense of place,” a council report said.

The amendment will also include an updated statement for the abandoned White Dog Hotel, which already has heritage protection.

Locals from across the Valley have been campaigning for the owners of the old hotel — known to many Duke’s Saloon — to save and reopen the 152-year old pub that has become run-down and derelict.

Yarra Ranges councillors will debate the matter at a council meeting on July 26.
