Lilydale KFC staff have been praised for quick thinking after a late night deep fryer fire.
Smoke could be seen billowing from the top of the roof and flames through the front door when firefighters arrived at the Main St, Maroondah Highway restaurant about 10pm on September 16.
Lilydale CFA Lieutenant Paul Simpson said all the staff had evacuated outside the front when firefighters arrived.
“The deep fryer and oil was on fire,” Mr Simpson said.
“Staff did the right thing and put the fire blanket over the fire and disabled the extraction fan which stopped the fire getting into the roof.”
He praised quick thinking staff.
“This could have had a different result,” Mr Simpson said.
He said the fire couldn’t be put out until it cooled down so firefighters continued to suppress the flames – were reaching about 1m – with a fire extinguisher.
“We just kept knocking the fire down until it cooled,” Mr Simpson said.
He said firefighters were at the restaurant for about two hours and the only damage was to the deep fryer.
