A child has been found safe after frantic neighbours phoned triple-0 to report a unit fire in Lilydale, with fears the youngster may have been trapped inside.

A CFA spokesperson said crews were called to the fire in Slevin St about 10pm Saturday and found the single-storey home fully involved with fire.

According to a post on the Lilydale CFA Facebook page, the brigade received multiple triple-0 calls about the fire, with reports that a child was unaccounted for, presumed trapped inside.

But crews quickly discovered that the youngster had evacuated the premises and was waiting at the letterbox for firefighters to arrive.

With support from the Chirnside Park, Mooroolbark and Bayswater brigades, firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in 20 minutes.

The fire was contained to the lounge and kitchen areas.

A candle has been determined as the possible source.

The Lilydale brigade said nobody was injured in the blaze but Ambulance Victoria was on scene to conduct precautionary health screenings on the occupants and firefighters.

Victoria Police was also on scene for traffic control.

“This unfortunate event has demonstrated the importance of evacuating and assembling at the letterbox in an emergency to ensure everyone is accounted for,” the brigade posted.
