Lillydale Lake: Two motorists caught allegedly speeding on Anderson St

A man is doing it tough, having lost his job to the coronavirus while he awaits the birth of third child in just eight weeks time. But his behaviour on Saturday night was no excuse, with police labelling it “ridiculous”.

A man who lost his job due to coronavirus and will welcome his third child in two months time was allegedly caught speeding while almost four times over the blood alcohol limit.

And while police said the man was going through hard times, his actions were “ridiculous”.

Yarra Ranges highway patrol Leading Senior Constable Scott Lardner said police were doing speed checks on Anderson St, Lilydale, about 10pm on Saturday night when they clocked two motorists doing 123km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Leading Sen-Constable Lardner said police took note of the registration of the second driver and began to chase the first, who allegedly didn’t pull over despite being followed with lights and sirens.

Police caught up with the driver 1.5km later when he stopped at traffic lights at Hull Rd.

Leading Sen-Constable Lardner said the driver, a Croydon man in his 30s, had the radio on and said he didn’t notice the police. He was later taken to Lilydale police station he allegedly blew a reading of .193.

His Jeep, which was fitted with a child’s car seat, was impounded and his licence was cancelled on the spot.

Leading Sen-Constable Lardner said the man was “an everyday dad who had unfortunately lost his job because of the virus” and was due to welcome a third child in eight weeks’ time.

He said while the man was going through hard times, his actions were “ridiculous”.

“I was appalled,” he said.

“These are the types of drivers we at highway patrol are trying to nail — because they will kill people.”

Leading Sen-Constable Lardner said police caught up with the driver of the ute, a 24-year-old Mt Evelyn man, the following day.

He will also be summoned to court for the alleged speeding, and police have applied to impound his vehicle.

Police also caught a Kilsyth man in his 30s driving with an alleged blood alcohol reading of almost three times the legal limit on Sunday night.

Leading Sen-Constable Lardner said the man was stopped on Mountain Highway, The Basin, about 9.30pm after police watched his car repeatedly mount the kerb.

His breath test returned an alleged reading of .147 back at Lilydale police station.
