Cases of coronavirus have risen again in Knox as the Mayor Nicole Seymour urges the community to remain vigilant and stay safe.

The Department of Health and Human Services has reported two live cases of coronavirus in Knox as the Victorian total reaches 1670 – an increase statewide of seven since yesterday.

The neighbouring communities of Yarra Ranges and Maroondah have no live cases, while Monash has two.

The call comes after authorities closed popular parks after hordes of people travelled to the 1000 Steps in Upper Ferntree Gully, the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens in Sherbrooke, and the Redwood Forest in Warburton East on the weekend.

Police were called in to direct traffic and keep order as hundreds of cars were turned back, and parking fines were handed out.

Knox Mayor Nicole Seymour urged the community to remain vigilant and do their bit to minimise the risk of catching the virus.

“I have been informed this morning that Knox has a new case of someone with COVID-19,” Cr Seymour said in a Facebook post.

“The government won’t tell council any details so I don’t know if this is a recently-returned traveller of community transmission.”

She said there were two people presently in home isolation, and overall 13 others had recovered from coronavirus.

“The reality is we cannot surround Knox in a bubble and keep the virus out,” Cr Seymour said.

“But each of us – you, me – can do our bit to minimise the risk of catching it, being a carrier or it and transferring it to our family, friends and work colleagues, school mates, and others in our neighbourhoods.”

Cr Seymour said while Knox was doing OK during the pandemic and showing positive signs of a relatively good “bounce back”, all the sacrifice and hardship could be undone if the Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton’s advice was not followed.

“Please, please be vigilant with your social distancing, hand hygiene and minimise where possible going to other municipalities where the number of cases is much greater than ours,” Cr Seymour said.
