One of Melbourne’s biggest basketball associations has assured players and spectators there is no need for panic despite two Covid-19 cases in consecutive weeks.
Knox Basketball Incorporated confirmed two people with Covid-19 had attended or played in games at its venues, one on Saturday, November 13, and another on Saturday, November 20, after its junior competitions resumed.
The association holds games across three venues — Wantirna South’s State Basketball Centre, Boronia’s Knox Basketball Stadium and Fairhills High School in Knoxfield.
Speculation of the most recent positive case emerged in a private Facebook group on Monday night.
Under DHHS guidelines introduced on November 19, vaccination requirements don’t apply to people involved in community sport.
KBI chief executive Grant Harrison said the association had informed all impacted players and spectators they were social contacts, and recommended they get tested for Covid-19 as per DHHS advice.
He said the association had also informed the department and Knox Council about the two cases.
Mr Harrison said the association was following all relevant Covid-safe measures and had a policy in place which included deep cleaning its venues three times a day.
“These are isolated cases and we have had no further positive cases since,” he said.
“Now that we are open under the 90 per cent (vaccination) threshold, this (Covid cases) will be a regular occurrence.
“We have been advised by DHHS we are gong above and beyond what we have to do … and our competitions will not be affected going forward.”
The association did not provide specific details of impacted games or venues which the cases attended.
The State Basketball Stadium’s phone number advised the venue was closed until further notice when Leader called on Tuesday morning.
But Mr Harrison said the stadium remained open for its usual activities including casual shooting and competitions.
He said the association urged anyone who was feeling unwell or who could have Covid-19 symptoms to not attend its venues as per its Covid-safe policy.
