Kilsyth’s Fonzies Diner pays tribute to family TV favourite Happy Days

A new 50s-inspired diner in Kilsyth is serving up all-American favourites with an edgy twist — and it’s helping the family who opened it heal after losing a loved one.

Kilsyth’s newest diner was made with a lot of a family’s heart and soul, and they want their customers to create some memories there too.

Fonzie’s Diner opened on July 26 and has already attracted a following thanks to its love of the era.

“My family always loved the 1950s and ’60s, it’s been a huge part of our lives,” owner Tiarnie Brasher said.

“We had a bit of a family tragedy when my brother (Corey) passed away last year, so we started looking for something to get us up and off our feet, do something that we love.

“My brother and I always talked about opening our own cafe together. It was our dream.

“So this is something for mum, dad and I together.”

With both her parents huge Elvis fans and her mum “a bit obsessed” with Betty Boop, the decor immediately sets the scene, while there is likely to be a classic car or two out the front.

“We are trying to keep it an authentic diner,” Ms Brasher said.

“We want people to come in, listen to some tunes, keep it simple, create some memories.

“We like taking photos of people having a good time, having a milkshake and listening to the jukebox, just stepping back and enjoying a moment with the ones you love the most.”

A pastry chef herself, Ms Brasher recommends trying out the cauliflower wings — although she is a bit biased because it is her recipe — among a lot of vegetarian options, while the pulled pork burger is a crowd favourite.

And as for the name?

“My Dad and I used to always watch Happy Days on the weekends, so when we were thinking of a name of course The Fonz popped into our heads and Fonzie’s Diner just fitted,” Ms Brasher said.

Fonzie’s Diner is at 93 Canterbury Rd, Kilsyth.

Closing late everyday, it is open from 11am weekdays and 8am on weekends.
