Traffic lights will finally be installed at a deadly Coldstream intersection after more than a decade of community campaigning.
The Federal Government will spend $20 million upgrading the Maroondah Highway in Coldstream including installing the lights where the main road meets Killara Rd and Station St.
Part of the cash will also go towards duplicating the Maroondah Highway, from Melba Highway to Ingram Rd, and installing traffic lights at the entrance to The Gateway estate.
ELECTION PROMISE TO FIX DANGEROUS COLDSTREAM INTERSECTION
PLEAS FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS AT A BUSY COLDSTREAM INTERSECTION
Firefighters, traders and residents have been campaigning for a set of traffic lights to ease congestion and give motorists and pedestrians a safer route across the busy intersection for more than 10 years.
In March 2015, a Lilydale man was killed after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing Maroondah Highway.
Coldstream CFA captain Sean Bethell said the fire brigade would be “extremely happy” to be able to exit Killara Rd onto the highway, which is almost impossible at the moment.
“It would be good for the brigade to be able to access the traffic lights when an emergency happens,” Mr Bethell said.
He called on the State Government to also pitch in cash and extend the duplication works up to the Warburton Highway.
Casey federal Liberal MP Tony Smith said the Maroondah Highway was the key gateway to the Yarra Valley.
“When completed, the project will not only reduce congestion and improve safety for local residents and businesses, but also for those who commute from Yarra Glen and Healesville each day, and for the millions of tourists who drive through Coldstream to visit the Yarra Valley,” said Mr Smith.
Evelyn state Liberal MP Bridget Vallence said she had fought hard with the community to improve roads and traffic safety at Maroondah Highway and Killara Rd.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison visited Maroondah last week to announce the government would also pump $121 million into train station carparking and road intersection upgrades across Melbourne.
