A woman in her 70s has made a lucky escape after her car crashed into a barrier, rolled and caught on fire in Heathmont.

The incident happened about 10am on a bend on Canterbury Rd, near the Heathmont Village precinct.

According to police, the Bayswater woman was in a black Jeep travelling towards the city when it suddenly crashed into a guard rail and wall, flipped on its roof and caught on fire.

A witness told Leader bystanders came by with fire extinguishers and other items to assist with smoke coming from the bottom of the car before firefighters arrived.

Emergency services workers helped pull the woman out of the car and into the care of paramedics.

Leader understands she suffered minor arm injuries and an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the woman, aged in her 70s, was taken to The Royal Melbourne hospital in a stable condition.

Traffic was reduced to one lane with cars banking up along Canterbury Rd into the morning.

Nearby resident John Williams said the car was “smoking greatly” when he came outside to check out the crash.

“There was a loud bang, I came out immediately and saw the Jeep had taken out the barrier and was upside down on the footpath,” he said.

“We often have accidents on the bend here, cars go into various residences on the side, especially when there’s water on the road.

“People cross over Heathmont Rd and think the 60km/h zone has come to an end, and they speed up, and they’re doing at least 70km/h when they come around the bend.”

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
