Four wedding guests have had a night to remember after they became stuck in the toilets at a venue in the Yarra Valley.
The Coldstream CFA brigade was called to help four women trapped in the bathroom/changing room at the main club house at the Eastern Golf Course in Victoria Rd Yering at 10.55pm Saturday.
Coldstream Fire Brigade captain Sean Bethell said the fully solid wooden door of the bathroom didn’t have a lock, but had become stuck when a mechanism failed.
“(The door) should just work when you turn the handle but it was only allowing them to turn about an eighth of a turn,” he said.
“The door mechanism failed on them and they just happened to be the unlucky ones stuck inside.”
Firefighters ended up having to drill out the side of the door to free the guests, which took about five to 10 minutes.
“From all reports the (guests stuck inside) were becoming a little bit distressed because they had been in there for some time and no one had been successful in being able to open the door,” Mr Bethell said.
“When we got them out they seemed upbeat and cheery.”
In a statement the Eastern Golf Club said after numerous attempts to open the door by staff and guests in attendance (including an engineer and several carpenters) were unsuccessful, in the interests of the guests’ wellbeing, the CFA were contacted.
“The CFA advised that the locking mechanism had seized. Whilst unsure how this occurred, we are undertaking measures to ensure it cannot be repeated,” the club said.
It’s not the first time the Coldstream brigade has been called out to rescue someone trapped in a toilet.
The crew was also called to help a distressed young girl who became stuck in a bathroom at a Yarra Valley winery about six months ago.
