A born-and-bred Knox couple are keen to see their suburb get some national television-love on this season of Channel 7’s House Rules.

Ferntree Gully married couple Pete and Courtney are one of the six pairs set to take over TV screens from Sunday April 28 as they compete in the popular home renovation show.

And viewers will see the young parents’ three-storey home go under the hammer, with filming crews having occupied hilly Bruce Crescent in November.

Knox Leader readers were thrilled to see the film crews hit up their foothills suburb at the time, and Pete and Courtney are just as excited for the area to get some publicity.

“I just think it’s awesome that Ferntree Gully’s on TV,” Pete said.

“We’ve been hashtagging on all our Instagram posts #gothegully.”

“It’s quite amusing and a bit fun.”

He grew up in Ferntree Gully, only a few streets from where the couple bought their house in July 2017.

Courtney was raised not far away in Wantirna South, and the pair have been high school sweethearts since meeting at Knoxfield’s Fairhill High School.

They said going on the national program had made them love their hometown even more.

“We’ve been all over Australia to all the other team’s houses, but there’s nothing quite like Ferntree Gully,” Courtney said.

Pete said he thought the other teams had felt similarly after visiting their green suburb.

“They couldn’t quite believe that we were still reasonably close to the city and we had still had beautiful views, and that you could buy a really large family home,” he said.

The couple’s three-level house is “one of the biggest ever” to appear on the show in seven seasons.

Courtney said their house had been “in desperate need of some love” and was bought with the intention of renovating.

“When we went to the open for inspection we knew the house needed a whole lot of work,” she said.

“But we walked out onto the balcony and saw the beautiful treescape among the hills and just thought ‘yep, this is our house’.”

Biggest Reality TV Blow Ups

She said the pair probably wouldn’t have taken the plunge and bought the big house had they not had their previous experience renovating a house.

As teachers, Pete and Courtney previously spent two weeks of school holidays doing-up a small house in Boronia, before selling it off to buy their family home.

The pair both work as dance teachers at private schools, with Pete employed at Caulfield Grammar School and Courtney at Wesley College.

They said they’d really enjoyed jumping into home design for the show and were proud of what they’d pulled off.

“We worked really hard to make sure that all of our rooms fit the house rules, will fit the family that live in them, but also that they’ve got a bit of Pete and Court’s flavour to them,” Pete said.

They said they loved “the once in a lifetime opportunity” to be on the show, but had found it difficult being away from their son Casper, who turned one in January.

“The renovating can be really hard and there’s long days, lots of things are really hard, but the hardest part is being away from Casper,” she said.

“His little face is sort of our driving support and encouragement through all the renovations because we’re definitely doing it for him.”

The pair can’t wait to for the show to start airing at 7pm on Channel 7.

“Even though we’re on the show, there is so much that we don’t actually know about the other teams or even about what happened in our house,” Pete said.

“Viewing it for us will almost be like a new experience.”

“I’m beside myself with excitement.”
