Emu legs it down Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Ferny Creek

It’s not every day you see an emu racing past a town post office, but this “old mate” caused commotion by hightailing it down Ferny Creek’s main road. Only in ’Straya.

This old guy was found running down Ferny Creek Main St before spending the night at David Jones' house.

An elderly emu has been captured and spent the night in the company of chickens after sending police on a wild-goose chase in Ferny Creek.

The “old boy” caused a slight commotion last night with police responding to reports of the gangly creature legging it down Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd sometime around 9pm yesterday.

The emu was sighted running past the old Post Office near Seaview Ave.

A member of the Yarra Valley Noticeboard posted a warning to road users about an emu on the loose.

“Emu on the run, Tourist Rd, Ferny Creek. Slow down, just near the old Post Office,” the post said.

A short time later David Jones, reached out to The Hills & The Dandenongs Facebook group to try and find the emu’s owners.

“Call out to anyone who is missing a very tame Emu in Ferny Creek,” the post said.

“He has a minor toe injury, which probably needs treatment.”

Speaking to Lilydale & Yarra Valley Leader, Mr Jones said a teenager had knocked on his door about 9.30pm and asked if we could look after the stray bird.

“I heard the local police had tried to find it earlier and couldn’t,” he said.

“A teenager came to our door last night and said there is an emu in your driveway, can we park it on your block?”

Mr Jones said the emu spent the night happily near the chook pen, and is now waiting for his family to come get him.

“He’s a really old guy but he’s very tame and absolutely gorgeous,” he said.

“Emus are good escape artists. I saw him jump over a fence.”
