A man accused of thefts from one of Melbourne’s biggest shopping centres has been busted asleep in his garage following an alleged four-week crime spree.

And the man, who was out on bail, faces more than 30 charges after officers found he was also allegedly in possession of drugs and ammunition.

Maroondah detective Senior Constable Paul Cosgrove said officers arrested the 34-year-old man after they attended a home in Brunswick St, Mitcham on December 7 at 8am.

They found the man asleep in his garage and uncovered a haul of stolen items throughout the property.

Sen-Constable Cosgrove said the collection included power tools and garden tools, bikes, lawnmowers, electronics and jewellery with a combined value of $10,000.

He said officers believed the items were from a series of thefts in Ringwood and Mitcham between November 10 and December 7.

Sen-Constable Cosgrove said the man was also wanted for thefts from retailer storage cages at Ringwood’s Eastland shopping centre on November 11.

They included $8000 of liquor from Block 7 Dumplings, and a cash register, cooking equipment and soft drinks from Dumplings Plus.

Sen-Constable Cosgrove said the man also allegedly broke into storage cages belonging to five other retailers including The Shaver Shop, Saba and Fruit Freaks.

“He’s been a person of interest wanted by this office for burglaries and thefts … and he’s definitely been active and hurting us,” he said.

Sen-Constable Cosgrove said the man was arrested and charged with 31 offences, including burglary, theft, handing stolen goods, drug possession, possession of ammunition without a permit, criminal damage, trespassing and committing offences while on bail.

The man faced the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on December 8 and was further remanded to face the court again at a later date.
