A Kiwi accused of breaking into the home of a former family friend to allegedly recover a debt, has been bailed.
Nathan Bradnock, 45, faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via link from custody on Tuesday, July 20.
He is up on charges including intent to steal, trespassing with intent to steal, theft, drug possession and possessing a prohibited weapon.
The court heard the Doncaster man is alleged to have smashed into a Templestowe property, with another person, looking for ‘Zane’ — a former family friend — and demanding “the stuff”.
Manningham detective Senior Constable Anthony Smith told the court the couple who were home at the time heard an “aggressive” knock on the window and the victim – a woman – heard a male voice say “open up”.
The woman’s partner, Zane, quickly scrambled to get up from filling his vapes and told the victim to get out, before he fled out the back door.
Senior Constable Smith said the victim heard the front window smash and two men, who she didn’t know, enter the lounge room.
The court heard one of the men, Mr Bradnock’s alleged co-offender, yelled at the woman, “Where’s the stuff?”
He was holding a taser and hunting knife in either hand and is alleged to have threatened the victim by clicking the sparking taser near her leg.
The unknown man continued to yell at the woman and stole her laptop and phone.
Senior Constable Smith said as the victim got up and told them she was leaving the alleged thug tasered the victim’s hip.
“(The victim) felt the laser burn on her skin,” he said.
The men are alleged to have left a short time later with a black Nike bag belonging to Zane, the woman’s laptop and phone.
Police allege after being shown a photo on Facebook, the victim identified one of the intruders as Mr Bradnock.
A few days’ later police raided Mr Bradnock’s Doncaster house and arrested him for the alleged aggravated home invasion.
Senior Constable Smith said police seized a Nike black bag, a 1.22 ammunition round, one plastic bag of dried mushroom material, an iPhone, a Samsung mobile phone, an SD card, a black taser, and numerous bags and a box containing vegetable matter.
Magistrate Luisa Bazzani granted bail with stringent conditions including a $10,000 surety.
“I accept there are risks in this case, in particular because of what appears to be a continuing dispute between Zane and Mr Bradnock.
Ms Bazzani said she was also concerned for the victim’s wellbeing.
Mr Bradnock will face the Magistrates’ Court for a committal mention in August.
