Dan Murphy’s applies to open store at 518 Mt Dandenong Road Kilsyth

A big name could be moving into a tired Yarra Ranges shopping village, with the plans sparking plenty of debate.

There are plans for a new Dan Murphy’s in Kilsyth.

A new Dan Murphy’s store could be coming to the Yarra Ranges, with the liquor giant eyeing a prime site in Kilsyth.

Dan Murphy’s owner Endeavour Group has submitted plans to bring a new store to 518 Mt Dandenong Rd, near an existing Coles store.

A public notice advertising Endeavour Group’s liquor licence application has been placed up at the site.

An Endeavour Group spokesperson said: “We have submitted an application to bring our unique Dan Murphy’s concept to life in Kilsyth as part of a broader development of the existing retail precinct.

“Subject to liquor license and planning approval, Dan Murphy’s Kilsyth could open in the second half of 2022 and provide around 25 local job opportunities.

“As with all our applications, we are committed to working constructively and collaboratively with all stakeholders during the application process, including considering any community feedback.”

Leader understands the planning application is for only a portion of the site – it’s not clear what impact the development will have on Coles.

The Coles store was listed for sale last year, and was sold last August, according to a real estate listing.

Coles has been contacted for comment.

The application has been listed as “in progress” on the Yarra Ranges Council website, with the council awaiting more information.

Dozens of people have commented on the plans on the Yarra Valley Noticeboard on Facebook, with opinions divided on the proposal.

Some welcomed Dan Murphy’s, and said they would no longer have to travel as far to buy alcohol, but others said they didn’t want to see Coles go.
