A major shuffle is on the cards at Rosebud Plaza as an Aussie favourite leaves the centre.
The centre has lodged a planning application with Mornington Peninsula Shire to demolish an existing Woolworths and build a Dan Murphy’s in its place.
Changes would also be made to the Point Nepean Road access to the centre.
The $9 million plan followed a decision by Target to close its Rosebud outlet later this year.
The space currently occupied by Target in the centre will be taken by Woolworths.
The application was lodged in February but as the site is covered by a development overlay the centre did not need to inform the public or advertise its plans.
Cr Antonella Celi recently posted about the plan on social media sparking a groundswell of objections to “yet another bottle shop”.
There are three liquor outlets within a 1km radius of the site earmarked for Dan Murphy’s – not including a BSW that is part of the existing Woolworths.
One man commented that many regarded Rosebud as an “idyllic beachside town”.
“Sadly most people don’t realise the social problems we have down here like homelessness, DV and alcohol abuse,” he posted.
Cr Celi said the cumulative impact of packaged liquor outlets was a serious concern.
However, she said the type of business chosen for the new building was a decision controlled by Rosebud Plaza management.
“The Shire does have an Alcohol Management Policy that is strong on alcohol harm minimisation and the assessment of cumulative impacts of packaged liquor outlets…that can be considered during the (planning application) assessment,” Cr Celi posted.
Rosebud Plaza has been contacted.
