Dan Andrews: Croydon’s The Public Brewery rebrands light beer to DanAnbrews

Dan Andrews now has his own beer thanks to a savvy sales move by a brewery in Melbourne’s outer east. But not everyone out this way is a fan of the Premier.

A Maroondah brewery has rebranded its light beer with a nod to Victoria’s Premier in a savvy sales move during Melbourne’s lockdown.

Croydon’s The Public Brewery has launched the limited edition DanAnbrews beer by whacking new labels on cans of its Featherweight light lager.

The rebrand is limited initially to 70 cases, and is available online or from the brewery’s Lacey St bottle shop from Wednesday.

Head brewer Gab Porto said the team came up with the idea after Melbourne’s sixth lockdown was announced late last week.

He said they had “no political leanings” but wanted to play on Premier Andrews’ infamous “get on the beers” phrase from a press conference at the peak of the virus outbreak last year.

“We’ve pivoted like Dan said and tried to find a way to sell beer … it’s our civic duty to get on the beers but in a responsible way,” he said.

Operations manager Andrew Croucher said the team quickly designed the artwork and had a team feverishly printing labels and sticking them over cans of the light beer.

He said the brewery also planned to send a six-pack to the Premier’s office for him to sample.

But not everyone is a fan of Mr Andrews in the eastern suburbs, with graffiti sprayed near Bayswater railway station after he announced the latest lockdown on Thursday.

The “F--- Dan Andrews” tags were visible on the Mountain Highway underpass and on the nearby rail corridor on Friday.

Leader spotted crews painting over the tags on Tuesday morning, shortly after inquiries were made with Metro Trains.

Metro spokesman James Ireland said crews would return to remove the remaining graffiti overnight on Sunday after services finished on the Belgrave line, due to safety issues.

“Graffiti vandalism is ugly, illegal and an issue we continue to tackle across the community,” he said.

Mr Ireland said Metro had notified police about the taggings for investigation.
