A suburban post office in Melbourne’s outer east will be shut for days after a car crashed into its entrance during a possible ram-raid attempt.

The car drove into the front of the Croydon Hills post office at McAdams Square about 4.40am on January 17.

Police believe the crash was an attempt to gain entry to the store and the shopfront was extensively damaged.

The post office has been boarded up with a sign on the front saying it would be closed for “a few days”.

Ten minutes later, a car also smashed into a shop on Brice Ave in Mooroolbark about 4.50am, which Leader understands sold cigarettes.

It is unclear if anything was stolen in each incident, and police are investigating whether the two are linked.

An Australia Post spokesman said police were investigating the incident and the organisation was working to repair the damage.

The spokesman said PO Box mail would still be sorted and delivered to the Croydon Hills post office, while customers could send and pick up parcels at Croydon’s post office in Main St.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage or witnessed either of the incidents can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
