Cold Chisel brave rain for Yarra Valley A Day on the Green at Rochford Winery

Cold Chisel’s only Melbourne concert was a wet one — but the beloved rockers were as tight as ever as they rocked Rochford Wines in Coldstream.

Despite the rain, Cold Chisel lit up the stage in front of more than 12,000 fans as they played the Yarra Valley on their Blood Moon Tour 2020.

After the band's Rutherglen show was cancelled due to smoke haze, Friday’s gig at Rochford Wines was the first of only two Victorian shows for the re-formed rockers this summer.

After splitting up in 1983, the band went on to play three reunion tours, and this one — deliberately playing unique outdoor venues — could be their last.

But if Friday’s sold-out show is anything to go by, none of thousands of fans, who braved the soggy weather, would want them to call it a day anytime soon.

From the opening bars of Standing On The Outside, Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Phil Small and Don Walker showed they were as tight as ever, 40 years after they began their musical journey.

Support acts included Magic Dirt, The Detonators and Birds Of Tokyo – who warmed the stage beforehand with an upbeat set which included past hits Broken Bones, Plans and Silhouettic.

Barnes appealed to the drenched crowd in light of the bushfires that continued to burn around the country.

“Don’t hate the rain, god knows they all need it, but it would’ve been nice if it came two hours later,” he said.

The rain finally stopped half an hour later and a rainbow and orange sunset emerged as the hits flowed.

If a closing trio of Flame Trees, Khe Sanh and Bow River didn’t win fans over, two encores with When The War Is Over and Cheap Wine, followed by Breakfast At Sweethearts and Forever Now ticked all fans favourites.

Two hours and 26 tracks later, Cold Chisel showed how much of legacy they’ve left on Australian rock, and why Getting The Band Back Together (their new single) for this tour was exactly the right thing to do.
