THE Coalition Government will spend $300,000 on a plan that would include fixing parking at the 1000 Steps if it wins this weekend’s election.
La Trobe federal Liberal MP Jason Wood said a re-elected Turnbull Government would provide $300,000 for a strategic feasibility study of Upper Ferntree Gully, which would include a resolution to fix carparking issues at the 1000 Steps.
Parking has been a problem at the 1000 Steps over the years as more people use the spot for exercise.
Police have been known to patrol the area and fine people parked illegally.
Knox Cr Karin Orpen said the $300,000 would allow for a feasibility study for a pedestrian/cyclist overpass which provides a link between the gateway of the Dandenongs and the “vibrant” Upper Ferntree Gully community.”
Mr Wood said the overpass would also provide the missing link between the Belgrave Lilydale Cycling Track.
“I am happy to see that after Knox City Council consulted with its community for over 14
months, we have been able to deliver an election commitment which sees one of the
community’s highest priorities met,” Mr Wood said.
“Encouraging people to use public transport by developing this overpass will also help reduce the strain on the already dangerous and oversubscribed carpark at the base of the 1000 Steps.”
