A popular Melbourne Santa who took his festive cheer elsewhere after a lunch-break debacle and having his hours cut, has been overwhelmed by community support.

Chirnside Park Shopping Centre’s Santa resigned after eight years in the job following a booking system issue, which meant children would miss out on seeing the big man in red while he had lunch.

Santa had wanted to work six days at Chirnside, but it’s understood his employer, event company Scene to Believe, considered the lengthy hours an OH&S issue.

Eager Yarra Valley Christmas lovers didn’t miss a trick and helped move Santa’s Grotto to Seville, where he will be greeting families from December 1.

And Santa has been overwhelmed by hundreds of people supporting the man they call The Real Deal in an outpouring of love on social media.

But you better get in quick because only hours after the booking system was released, times are starting to fill up.

“I’m overwhelmed and just thinking about it I have tears welling up in my eyes,” he said.

“It’s just amazing. I’ve been reading all the lovely comments … and the profits will be going to charity, which makes me feel so good.

Santa said he was really looking forward to seeing everyone and having some fun.

“I would encourage people to dress up this year, in onesies or bring in some props or signs, let’s make it a good end to the year,” he said.

Many of his loyal supporters said they would follow him from the shopping centre to his new Yarra Valley workshop.

One woman said shopping centre management would be kicking themselves.

Another said she was trying to cancel her booking at the centre to rebook for the real Santa in Seville.

While one mum, who has eight photos of her children — aged three to 23 — with the real Santa Claus said she needed another photo for her collection.

All profits from those who book in to see Santa will be donated to the charity of Santa’s choice.
