Two teenage boys were chased down by witnesses who caught them allegedly setting a fire behind a Mooroolbark school.
The boys were spotted allegedly deliberately lighting the fire in property behind a school on Cambridge St at 5.50pm on Tuesday.
The fire quickly spread to a number of trees, before burning a large patch of nearby grass.
Two witnesses chased the boys, and while running, phoned the local police station to alert officers.
The boys were arrested by officers nearby and were taken into custody.
Both boys were issued with a caution and released.
No one was injured during the blaze and the flames did not spread to any buildings nearby.
Anyone found guilty of deliberately or recklessly lighting a fire could face up to 15 years imprisonment.
Lighting a fire on a total fire ban day can attract a fine of up to $46,000 or up to two years in jail.
