Can I go fishing in Victoria: Trout released in Melbourne lakes for families within 5km radius
If you enjoy a spot of fishing, rainbow trout weighing in at 4kg may soon be swimming 5km from you. Here’s which lakes around Melbourne — from the inner suburbs to the urban fringes — where the fish will be biting.

Whopper rainbow trouts are about to be released into Victorian lakes for families and those keen to lure in dinner.
The State Government is stocking 18 Victorian waterways with 500 4kg stonkers, which will join the smaller trout already stocked into the lakes considered family fishing spots.
Authority chief executive Travis Dowling said the huge fish would be released this week and finish up by Wednesday, October 14.
“The stockings are funded by fishing licence fees and the State Government’s $35 million Target One Million plan for recreational fishing,” Mr Dowling said.
“Rainbow trout are perfect for those new to fishing because they’re easy to catch and taste great on the plate.”
However lockdown rules still apply and there is a limit on how many fish you can take with you.
Mr Dowling said a daily bag limit of five trout applied, and only two of those fish could exceed 35cm.
He said under Stage 2 of the State Government’s road map to easing restrictions, fishing was permitted within 5km of home or work.
Other rules that apply include a limit of up to five people from a maximum of two households, for up to two hours per day, split into a maximum of two sessions.
People must be able to keep 1.5m distance from others, no equipment should be shared and everyone must wear a fitted face mask at all times.
