A Boronia sex shop owner was violently attacked by a customer as he was leaving work early in the morning.

Brendon Jessop, 29, was sentenced to 82 days’ jail and a 30-month corrections order in the County Court on October 2, with a jury having found him guilty of attempted armed robbery.

Jessop used a piece of timber to try to rob the man after he got into his car about 3am on June 23, 2018, having just closed up his adult store.

The victim was sitting in the car when Jessop used the piece of wood to shatter its driver’s window, hitting the man in the head with the weapon.

Jessop then threatened “to smash” the man unless he handed over all his cash.

The victim got out of his car and backed away, before Jessop rifled through it, and ran away empty-handed.

Minutes later Jessop strolled to a nearby 7-Eleven and bought a coffee.

He was arrested by police when he returned to the store about 4.30am for another drink.

Jessop had been to the victim’s adult shop earlier in the night and bought some product.

He told police he’d spent the night playing pokies at Zagame’s Boronia and had smoked cannabis.

Jessop pleaded not guilty to the armed robbery, which was caught on CCTV, but was found guilty by a jury in March after trial.

Jessop was on a community corrections order and living in Boronia with his pregnant partner at the time of the crime.

Jessop’s lawyer told the court his client had abused alcohol and drug abuse from a young age and had grappled with homelessness and mental health issues for years.

The court heard Jessop had borderline personality disorder and reduced cognitive functioning.

It was heard he had stopped using drugs when his daughter was born soon after the offence, and that he was living in Mornington with a new partner and had been working doing roof tiling and plumbing.

Judge Michael Cahill sentenced Jessop to the 82 days’ jail he served before he was granted bail and put him on the corrections order.
