Hospitals in Melbourne east have copped dozens of cases of the deadly coronavirus.

According to State Government data 66 cases of coronavirus were recorded in hospital staff in Melbourne’s east – none of them are active.

These were part of the 1020 cases in healthcare staff working in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire hospitals.

Monash Medical Centre in Clayton had 20, Box Hill Hospital had 20, Maroondah Hospital had 20, Knox Private Hospital had eight and Wantirna health had six.

Leader previously reported a Knox Private Hospital spokesman said the hospital had been treating coronavirus patients and like other health facilities had a small number of staff who tested positive and were isolating.

Victoria’s chief medical officer Andrew Wilson said the “once-in-a-century” coronavirus pandemic represented the biggest challenge the health system had ever faced.

“Our dedicated doctors and nurses have risen to challenge, and we are proud and thankful for the sacrifices and remarkable work they do every day saving lives and keeping us safe,” Prof Wilson said.

“Our falling cases numbers are testament to work they do in extremely difficult conditions to limit the spread of this wildly infections virus.”

He said Victoria’s guidance for personal protective equipment was among the strongest in the world and sat above the National and World Health Organisation guidance.

“Victoria’s health system is well-prepared, adaptable and resilient and all Victorians can be reassured that whether our health services are ready to provide care to those who need it, when they need it,” he said.
