Boronia, Knox, Croydon, Lilydale police stations get road, sex and crime officers

Child abuse and sex offenders in Melbourne’s outer east should be warned — there are more detectives on the case. This comes as more police officers hit the streets in Yarra Ranges, Knox and Maroondah.

More detectives will be investigating some of the outer east’s most heinous crimes after an injection of manpower into specialist police teams.

The State Government has deployed 30 officers into police stations in Knox, Yarra Ranges and Maroondah, with half of those helping investigate criminal activities, sex offences and keeping the roads safe.

The extra jobs follow an announcement earlier this year that 55 new officers would be deployed to the outer east division by March 2021.

Since then 15 officers have joined the division’s specialist units including highway patrol, criminal investigation, and sex and child abuse crime teams.

There will be another nine detectives join these units by early next year.

By early 2021 there will be 22 constables joining stations across all three police service areas, with eight already at Olinda, Mt Evelyn, Boronia, Lilydale and Croydon stations.

There will be nine sergeants joining teams at Knox, Croydon and Boronia.

Superintendent Tony Glenane said the new officers had already provided a substantial boost to policing efforts, visibility and engagement across the community.

“These additional resources mark an exciting time for us as it provides an opportunity for increased community connection and allow us to address some of the community’s concerns, such as crime prevention, public order, and road trauma, in an increasingly timely manner,” Supt Glenane said.

“The area we’re responsible for policing has a high number of major arterial roads which experience a significant amount of traffic flow between the CBD and growth areas in the south east.”

He said having the extra highway patrol members would significantly boost the division’s ability to address road trauma and proactively enforce against those who show a blatant disregard for road safety, including hoons and drug and drink drivers.

“We also have more sex offences and child abuse detectives than ever before, ensuring we are well placed to not only support survivors of sexual and physical abuse, but further enhance our supervision and management of those with a history of serious sexual offending,” he said.
