From Kath & Kim to Neighbours, some of the country’s best TV shows have been filmed in Melbourne.

From Fountain Gate to Ramsay St, locations around the city have been immortalised on screen forever.

Kath & Kim

It doesn’t get much more Melbourne than Kath & Kim, Shane Warne and Luna Park.

In the memorable final episode of the hit series, which ran from 2002-2007, Warne starred as Wayne, a Shane Warne impersonator, who is marrying Sharon (Magda Szubanski).

The episode begins with Sharon anxiously waiting for her groom at the St Kilda amusement park.

Other Melbourne locations to feature in the show include the famous Kath & Kim house in Fountain Lakes (which was actually in Patterson Lakes and recently got demolished), along with Fountain Gate Shopping Centre (many scenes were actually filmed at Southland), the Tramcar Restaurant and Festival Hall.

And who could forget Kath showing Sandy Freckle (William McInnes) Melbourne hot spots including Ikea, Barbeques Galore and Cartridge World along with the “Golden Mile” of car dealerships.

HOMICIDE

Homicide, which ran from 1964 -1977, followed fictional detectives of the Victoria Police homicide squad as they solved crimes and murders.

According to the National Film Archive of Australia, the show was produced by Crawford Productions and many of its cast members became household names, with millions of viewers tuning in to watch each week.

OFFSPRING

The hit show was so popular a walking tour popped up featuring locations the Proudman family visited.

Filmed around Collingwood, Fitzroy and North Fitzroy, Offspring followed the life of obstetrician Nina Proudman (played by Keddie).

The ‘Nina effect’ influenced more young people to move to the inner northern suburbs, with The Union Club Hotel in Fitzroy hosting many memorable scenes.

The show screened on Channel 10 from 2010-2017 and is now airing on Netflix.

THE SULLIVANS

The antics of the fictional Sullivan family, headed by Dave (Paul Cronin) and Grace (Lorraine Bayly), who lived at 7 Gordon St in Camberwell during World War II became a must-watch in Melbourne. Fans recognised the suburbs, trams, parks and buildings and enjoyed the spot-on props and costumes.

BLUE HEELERS

Who could forget the romance between Maggie (Lisa McCune) and PJ (Martin Sacks) in the fictional town of Mount Thomas?

The hit show, also starring John Wood as Sergeant Tom Croydon, was a much watch for viewers when it aired between 1994-2006.

Filming took place in Williamstown, Newport, Castlemaine, Wyndham and Werribee.

NEIGHBOURS

More than a million Aussies recently tuned in to bid a fond farewell to Neighbours after 37 years.

Ramsay Street was actually Pin Oak Court Vermont South.

PRISONER

One of Australia’s most popular shows, Prisoner was filmed in various Melbourne locations including Nunawading, Spotswood and Abbotsford.

It ran from 1979 – 1986.

MATLOCK POLICE

With Australian TV star Paul Cronin among the cast, Matlock Police followed the exploits of uniformed police and detectives in the fictional Victorian town of Matlock.

The show’s on-location scenes were filmed mainly in Melbourne’s outer east (Matlock police station was in Ringwood) and the Yarra Valley.

THE SECRET LIFE OF US

The Secret Life of Us stars Abi Tucker, Tasma Walton, Sibylla Budd, Claudia Karvan, and Deborah Mailman in 2000.

Filmed at some iconic St Kilda locations, including the Sea Baths and The Espy, The Secret Life of Us continues to draw rave reviews from viewers discovering it for the first time on Netflix.

Following a group of 20-somethings it’s all star cast includes Claudia Karvan and Samuel Johnson.

It aired from 2001-2005.
