Belgravia Leisure announced as new operators of Knox Leisureworks

An outdoor play park will be built at a Boronia aquatic centre, with a new operator taking over the reigns at the pool. It comes after parents pulled their children out of swimming lessons at the centre because the water was too cold.

A new outdoor leisure play park will be built at Knox Leisureworks.

But don’t grab your towel and sunscreen yet — it’s still up to five years away.

Knox Council announced the new addition to the Boronia pool as part of a five-year plan for its future growth and operation.

The council said the new park would be added during the next five years to “reinvigorate” the outdoor precinct of the Tormore Rd facility, at a cost of almost $400,000.

Knox Mayor Jake Keogh said the addition of the play park was great news for families.

“We’ve been focused so much during past decades on the inside of the building, that it’s time we add something special to the external part of the Boronia site,” he said.

The new park was announced as part of the successful tender by Belgravia Leisure, who will take over from operator Victorian YMCA. Belgravia will run the centre for the next five years with further possible extensions based on meeting performance standards.

In November Knox Leader reported parents were pulling their children out of swimming lessons at the centre because the water was too cold, with several pools closed over Melbourne Cup weekend because water temperatures were “cooler than normal”.

Knox Council community services director Tanya Clark said Belgravia Leisure would be expected to manage the centre’s facilities to the highest possible standard.

“Council, as owner of the facility, acknowledges that intermittent cold temperatures have been an issue in the past, and will work closely with Belgravia in ensuring that future instances are minimised as much as possible,” Ms Clark said.
