Belgrave South, Ringwood motorists lose licences for drink and drug driving, speeding

Highway patrol police have been busy in Melbourne’s outer east, busting a P-plate driver fanging it down the Ringwood Bypass and a drugged-up motorcyclist hooning at more than 150km/h in Belgrave South.

Drugged and boozed-up drivers have been caught hooning at speeds of more than 100km/h in the outer east, and police are putting drivers on notice.

A 59-year-old man lost his licence for more than a year after he was caught speeding on his motorbike down Wellington Rd at 156km/h through Belgrave South about 5.40pm on Saturday, May 16.

Highway patrol police stopped the motorcyclist, who was clocked at 56km/h above the 100km/h speed limit, and reported the man also returned a positive test for illicit drugs.

The man is facing hefty fines totalling more than $1300 for hooning and drug driving.

His driver’s licence will be suspended for 18 months.

Highway patrol officers also reported stopping a 20-year-old P-plate driver after he was found speeding at 123km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Ringwood Bypass about 10.40pm on Saturday night.

Officers said the man was taken to the police station and returned a positive evidentiary breath test result of .111 – more than double the .05 legal blood alcohol limit.

Police fined the man $1404 and cancelled his driver’s licence for 11 months.

He will have an alcohol interlock installed in any car he drives when his licence is restored.

Police have warned road users the penalties for speeding with drugs or alcohol in their system were severe, and if affected drivers were involved in a collision where someone is injured or killed, the consequences would be devastating.
