Burger fans in the outer east could soon have two new restaurants to choose from, with plans revealed for a huge $4.5m fast food development in Bayswater North.

Popular burger chains Oporto and Slims, a diner-style burger restaurant currently only based in Sydney, are proposed to open on the corner of Bayswater and Canterbury Rd.

Maroondah Council has received a planning permit application for 340-344 Bayswater Rd and 303 Canterbury Rd.

The application seeks approval for two stand-alone convenience restaurant buildings – Oporto and Slims – and two takeaway food premises within a third building.

All businesses are proposed to operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

The corner site, diagonally opposite Anaconda, is currently home to four houses which are set to be demolished.

Oporto, which serves fresh grilled chicken and burgers, already has several locations in Melbourne including Springvale and Narre Warren.

But it would be the first Slims in Melbourne, with the chain currently only based in Sydney.

It describes its food as “quality burgers made from quality ingredients”.

“Slim’s are a fast food burger business, established in Sydney, who serve high quality burgers to their patrons through selective ingredient sourcing,” the planning permit application said.

“Slim’s restaurant fit outs are reminiscent of a 1970s diner experience, with their proposed Bayswater North operation seen as an expansion to the Melbourne market.”

The future tenants of the takeaway food premises are set to be confirmed at a later date.

The Slims restaurant is proposed to have a dual lane drive-through, while Oporto would have a single lane drive-through.

There will be 53 carparking spaces on-site.

“The subject site is located within an area that is highly commercial in nature and is located on the corner of two major roads,” the planning permit application said.

“The site is identified as the only site on the corner of Bayswater Road and Canterbury Road that is not commercial, and as such a viable opportunity exists for economic growth within the area.”

The application is currently listed as “under assessment” on the Maroondah Council website.

The application was advertised in early May, with 32 submissions received to date. A review of the proposal continues, taking into consideration the requirements of the planning scheme as well as community feedback. Once the review and assessment is completed, a decision will be made.

Maroondah Mayor Rob Steane said the application was advertised in early May, with 32 submissions received to date.

“A review of the proposal continues, taking into consideration the requirements of the planning scheme as well as community feedback,” Cr Steane said.

“Once the review and assessment is completed, a decision will be made.”
