Bank of Melbourne Chirnside Park Shopping Centre branch to close March 10

Bank branches continue to disappear in the outer east, with another to shut its doors in a few weeks.

The Bank of Melbourne branch at Chirnside Park Shopping Centre will close on March 10.

The Bank of Melbourne will close its Chirnside Park Shopping Centre branch next month, the latest in a string of bank closures across the outer east.

The branch will close on March 10, following a declining number of customers and more people using online banking.

It follows the closure of the Westpac Lilydale branch last September, with the Bank of Melbourne also closing its Croydon branch.

A Bank of Melbourne spokesperson said Westpac Group, which includes Westpac, Bank of Melbourne, St. George and BankSA, has more than five million digitally active customers “and we know their expectations are changing”.

“That’s why we’re investing in digital services so our customers can bank with us anywhere, at any time,” the spokesperson said.

“Changing and declining customer use of branches means that in some instances, we may make a difficult decision to close a branch. In these instances, we continue to support our customers by expanding access via Bank@Post, telephone, mobile and virtual banking.”

Bank of Melbourne Chirnside Park customers can do their cash transactional banking over-the-counter at Westpac Chirnside Park, which is also in Chirnside Park Shopping Centre, and can perform fee-free ATM transactions at the Westpac ATM.

The spokesperson said it had a robust process in place to help employees to find new opportunities within Westpac Group, meaning the majority of employees affected secure a new role and continue their career in the Group.

“Where an employee doesn’t secure a role to stay with Westpac Group, we have financial and tailored career transition support available to help them secure employment elsewhere in the local community.”
