Is this Melbourne’s ugliest roundabout? A Belgrave local certainly thinks so, giving it a dubious ‘award’ to crown its ‘achievement’.
The sign, which says “Award, Ugly Round A-Bout” appeared at the busy Belgrave Gembrook and Belgrave Hallam roads intersection over the weekend and many in the hills agree.
Damyn Gordon, who lives on Belgrave Gembrook Rd near the roundabout, said she was walking to work when she saw the sign.
Ms Gordon posted the photo to a Dandenong Ranges community Facebook group, and members laughed and agreed.
One member said this one and the roundabout on Belgrave’s main street needed some love.
“Thanks for whoever created this poster … maybe we could work with council to implement a plan to make these open spaces more appealing as per the Kallista roundabout,” they said.
Another person said: “I saw it yesterday and had a giggle, too. I had been wondering about the tyre marks in the mulch (and mud) recently. Have there been accidents, are people deliberately driving over the roundabout, or is it just laziness?”
Talking to Lilydale & Yarra Valley Leader Ms Gordon called the roundabout “horrendous”.
“Someone has a particularly succinct sense of humour,” she said.
“It’s a shame we can’t do something like the Kallista roundabout.”
She said someone had planted poppies and wildflowers, which looked gorgeous in full bloom.
“Ours is just stark, dug up and horrible,” she said.
Ms Gordon said someone tried to grow succulents on the roundabout at one stage but they were removed by authorities.
“It’s a very, very busy roundabout, and a major intersection for Belgrave Gembrook and Belgrave Hallam roads,’’ she said.

“The traffic volume has got busier and we know because we’ve lived on this road for 21 years.
“Coming out of our driveway has got worse. Sometimes we have to sit for ages just to get out.”
Ms Gordon said the roundabout was tight and trucks often drove across the middle of it.
VicRoads has been contacted for comment.
