The number of coronavirus cases in Whittlesea increased by 29 overnight, with 109 active cases in the community.

According to Friday’s figures from The Department of Health and Human Services there are 198 confirmed cases (ever) of coronavirus in Whittlesea, up from 169 yesterday.

The number of active cases increased by 26 to 109, up from 83 yesterday.

An employee from the Epping Costco store has been diagnosed with coronavirus, while there are still 19 cases linked to the Northern Hospital.

In Banyule coronavirus cases have also continued to rise.

According to Friday’s figures, Banyule now has 207 cases, with 107 active, up from Thursday’s 178 cases, with 79 active.

It was better news in Nillumbik where there were 39 cases Friday, with 11 active, compared to 40 cases, with 13 active on Thursday.

Whittlesea Council is urging residents with symptoms to get tested at a new site in Mernda.

It comes as RMIT confirmed on Tuesday a student who attended its Bundoora campus for a short amount of time on July 6 and 8 has tested positive for COVID-19.

An RMIT spokesperson said the student was self-isolating.

“Anyone that the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has deemed as having come into close contact with the impacted student has been contacted directly and instructed to self isolate and seek testing,” the spokesperson said.

They said the university had been rigorously following its COVIDSafe plan, including meticulous physical distancing parameters, stringent hygiene requirements and increased cleaning and sanitisation.

“Additionally, a deep clean was undertaken over the weekend and temperature checks are now in place for anyone entering the campus,” the spokesperson said.

“The health and safety of the RMIT community remains our absolute priority and we will continue working closely with DHHS, and in accordance with its protocols.”

Students have only been coming on campus to complete their practical based activities that cannot be done remotely.

Active cases are defined as someone who has tested positive, is currently in isolation and being monitored by the Department and who has not yet recovered.

Northern Health has advised on social media all visitors, outpatients and emergency department patients at the hospital would be required to wear a face mask.

Victoria has recorded 428 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 5165.

The overall total has increased by 415, after 13 cases were reclassified – largely due to duplication.

Stage three stay at home restrictions are in force for the next five weeks across metropolitan Melbourne, including Whittlesea, and the Mitchell Shire.
