Whittlesea, Banyule coronavirus: COVID-19 cases recorded in Victoria

Outbreaks in aged care, meat processing plants and an early childhood centre are behind a surge in coronavirus cases in Whittlesea.

The number of active coronavirus cases in Whittlesea increased by 19 overnight, with 518 active cases in the community.

According to Thursday’s figures from The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) there are 806 confirmed cases (ever) of coronavirus in Whittlesea, up from 780 on Wednesday.

The number of active cases increased by 19 to 518, up from 509 on Wednesday.

The number of active coronavirus cases has grown by 126 in the last week – up from 392 active cases last Thursday, July 30.

There are now 169 cases linked to Epping Gardens Aged Care, up from 155 on Wednesday.

It means Epping Gardens now officially has the most cases of any aged care home in the state.

There have now been 196 cases linked to Bertocchi Smallgoods in Thomastown, up from 189 cases Thursday.

There have also been 29 cases linked to at Ingham’s Thomastown, and 43 linked to Nino Early Learning Centre in Bundoora.

Last week the DHHS said six cases had also been linked to the Centrelink office in Epping.

Epping has been revealed as Whittlesea’s coronavirus hotspot, with new postcode specific data revealing the suburbs with the highest number of cases.

Victoria has recorded 471 new cases of coronavirus since Wednesday, with the total number of cases now at 13,469.

The overall total has increased by 434, due to 37 cases being reclassified – largely due to duplication.

According to Thursday’s figures, Banyule now has 382 cases, with 148 active, compared to Wednesday’s 379 cases, with the same amount of active cases – 148.

Nillumbik had 109 cases Thursday, with 69 active – up from 105 cases, with 65 active on Wednesday.

As hospitals prepare for a possible influx of coronavirus patients, a Northern Health spokesperson said it had 18 ICU beds and had strong contingency plans in place for any escalation, including the ability to scale up to 46 ventilated beds.

“The safety of our patients, visitors and staff is our highest priority, so along with other metropolitan health services, we have had to limit visitor numbers and hours,” the spokesperson said.

Other past confirmed coronavirus cases in Whittlesea include staff members from Northern Hospital, staff members from Epping Costco, a staff member from the Pandora store at Epping Plaza, a student from RMIT Bundoora and several cases at schools, including Epping Views Primary School.
