Video of Preston station rat swarm goes viral on Reddit

The rat race got a little too real for morning commuters in Melbourne’s north when pedestrians had to dodge a swarm of rodents scurrying around the footpath.

The rat race is getting a little too real for morning commuters at a train station in Melbourne’s north.

Pedestrians near Preston Station were this morning treated to a swarm of them scurrying in and out of footpath drains.

The video, taken early this morning and posted on Reddit, shows rats scurrying away from the approaching camera.

They can also be seen camped out near the fence separating the nature strip from the train platform.

Reddit user mattyess posted the footage on the popular online messageboard and it attracted a lot of attention.

“This is on the other side of the tracks from (Preston Market)...probably the number-one reason they’re around in such big numbers,” he wrote.

Multiple commenters suggested they had been there for years.

A Metro Trains spokesman said Pest control experts attended Preston Station every month, and were there as recently as Tuesday this week.

“While Metro has a pest control program in place, this problem is not specific to the station itself,” he said.
