Victorian state election 2014: Moreland Citizen of the Year Peter Allan runs for Northern Metropolitan Region

MORELAND’S Citizen of the Year has made a bold state election play to wrestle the balance of power in the next State Government.

Peter Allan will run as an independent candidate for the Northern Metropolitan Region, hoping to gain an upper house seat and promote environmental causes and good governance.

Mr Allan believes he has a good chance of winning a seat and influencing the new government.

“The final seat in the Northern Metropolitan Region at the last election did deliver the balance of power,” Mr Allen said.

“It’s widely believed again that this seat will control who is in power in the upper house.”

The small business owner has already played a part in several changes to the local and wider community, having in varying capacities advocated for Moreland Council to provide home recycling bins and rooftop panels, and for bans on cigarette advertising and phasing out of leaded petrol.

If elected, Mr Allan would campaign for the Upfield train line to be put underground, housing built on the land above and the project funded by a public/private partnership.

Mr Allan wants to ban corporate political donations, phase out coal for renewable energy and advocate for a Victorian independent commission against corruption.

He would also like to see the Ford’s Broadmeadows factory, which is to be closed, transformed into Australia’s first vehicle disassembly facility, “basically to recycle (cars) properly”.

Mr Allan is among 52 |candidates to nominate for the Northern Metropolitan Region, which includes eight Moreland residents.
