PHONE THREATS

A man who threatened to blow up his ex-girlfriend and her mother’s house said he was doing it as payback for them threatening to set bikies on to him. Trevor Burley appeared at the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with making the threats mid last year following the breakdown of his three-month relationship with his ex-girlfriend in June. Leading Senior Constable Matthew Toohey told the court Burley was homeless when he met his ex-partner and her mother. They invited him to live with them at their Reservoir home but the relationship soon soured and he was asked to leave. The court heard Burley continued to make threatening phone calls to the home, threatening to send someone “to bash them” and telling them he wanted to burn the house down or blow it up. Leading Sen-Constable Toohey said Burley told police he wanted his victims to “s**t their pants” because they’d threatened to have bikies chase him down and he wanted to “show (them) I know people too”. Magistrate Ian Alger convicted Burley and ordered he pay a $1200 fine.

LOCK ME UP

A 45-year-old man has told a court he’d rather stay in jail than be released back into the community on a corrections order where he may be tempted to fall back into old habits. Rodney Faulkner faced the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to two thefts, drug possession and possession of a weapon. Leading Senior Constable Matthew Toohey told the court Faulkner was arrested after he tried to steal a shaver from Northland Shopping Centre, and CCTV also showed he stole a bike from the centre on August 14, 2018. Leading Sen-Constable Toohey told the court police found four valium tablets, a small knife, a handheld butane fire starter and cable ties on Faulkner when they arrested him on Wednesday. Faulkner’s lawyer told the court his client used ice daily for five or six years but had since remained clean following his release in November from his latest jail stint. Faulkner’s lawyer said his client did not want to be placed on a community corrections order because he didn’t want to associate with other offenders and be tempted to fall back into drug use. Magistrate Ian Alger convicted Faulkner and sentenced him to 14 days’ jail with one day of pre-sentence detention counted as time served.

SPEED DEMON

A man has escaped conviction after he pleaded guilty to blowing the speed limit by 46km/h after a night out on the town with his workmates. Liam Padget, of Eltham, pleaded guilty at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to doing 146km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Eastern Freeway in Clifton Hill on July 1 last year. Leading Senior Constable Matthew Toohey told the court Padget unwittingly overtook an unmarked police car when he was hastily making his way home on his high-powered BMW motorbike. When police eventually caught up to him and made him pull over, Leading Sen-Constable Toohey told the court Padget said he didn’t realise he was speeding and he thought he was only “a little bit over”. Padget’s lawyer told the court his client worked with the government and a conviction would impact his career. Magistrate Ian Alger fined Padget $700 and suspended his licence for 12 months.
