STATE Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has backed a full redevelopment of Broadmeadows train station during her visit to the station today.

Admitting the neglected station needed “significant improvement”, Ms Allan said her department was working on a business case investigating further upgrades to the station to enable it to cope with Broadmeadows’ booming population.

“As part of our future plans for the suburban rail loop, Broadmeadows is going to be one of three key regional metro super hubs where metro and regional trains will interface,” Ms Allan told the Leader.

“One of the good challenges we have … is that more and more people are choosing to catch the train from Broadmeadows station.

“This is becoming one of our really busy stations in the northern suburbs, so we know that we need to cater for that increased number of public transport users.”

The announcement follows a push by Hume councillors for state election candidates to commit funding for a redevelopment of Broadmeadows station ahead of the state election in November.

The challenge came despite the recent completion of new toilets at the station, built through $4 million dollars of state money which is also being used to fund a new northern entrance, concourse and upgrades to the pedestrian subway.

Broadmeadows station has also been selected as one of three key metro “super hubs” linking passengers to the proposed $50 billion dollar suburban rail loop announced by the State Government last month.

Just 16km from Melbourne’s CBD, the station has been recognised as an ideal location for a major interchange or “super hub” which would connect the Albury-Wodonga regional railway line and the new Melbourne Airport Rail Link to the northern section of the loop.

The proposed 90km subway rail system would link Melbourne’s growing suburbs from Cheltenham in the southeast to Werribee in the west.

Construction of the loop would begin in 2022 if the State Government is elected in November.
