A teenager is lucky to be alive after he was flung from his ute in a terrifying crash in Thomastown.

The 19-year-old Wandong man was travelling south in a white Mitsubishi Triton along the Hume Highway slip road on Saturday night, heading onto the Metropolitan Ring Rd about 8.20pm, when he lost control. He was thrown out of the car as the ute flipped seven times.

The P-plater was rushed to hospital with a shattered pelvis, fractured skull and a number of broken spinal discs.

Greensborough highway patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Ashley Hodges said the ute continued rolling for 250m, even after the driver had already been thrown from the ute.

Police believed alcohol and speeding played a part in the crash.

Acting Sen-Sgt Hodges urged anyone who saw the incident or who potentially captured dashcam footage to phone Greensborough police station on 8432 0200.

The crash comes amid a major police road blitz, Operation Arid, which targeted drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs and fatigue over the Labour Day long weekend.
