A lower-order rearguard led by wicketkeeper Rory Collins has Plenty Valley primed to claim the scalp of VSDCA frontrunner Bayswater.

The Bats were under pressure at Bayswater Oval on Saturday when Luke Saultry (3-33) removed Daniel Heatley (8) to leave the visitors 5-109.

But Collins counterattacked with aplomb, clubbing 88 from 92 balls in an innings which was highlighted by 11 fours and one six.

The knock was Collins’ fourth half-century of 2018-19 and arguably his most important since crossing to A.K Lines Reserve.

His 88-run seventh-wicket stand with rising star Jai Lemire (35) helped turn the match in Plenty Valley’s favour.

Lemire, who started the campaign in the Third XI, faced 69 balls as he played an adept support act to Collins.

Gloveman Collins was the seventh wicket to fall, trapped lbw by former Queensland quick Matthew Gale within sight of a century.

Simon Black (13 from 16) and Dayne Smith (21 from 11) capped a memorable turnaround with a whirlwind 33-run ninth-wicket stand which launched the Bats to 8-255.

Plenty Valley is one of four sides on 42 points, sitting third ahead of Noble Park, Brunswick and Box Hill on percentage.

The Wicks are well-placed to secure an outright win over Endeavour Hills in Round 12, putting the Bats’ hopes of a home final in jeopardy should they fail to convert Saturday’s comeback into their eighth win of the summer.

The Eagles will resume at 3-35 in their second innings after being routed for 87 earlier in the day.

Brunswick cruised to 3-151 before declaring with a 64-run advantage.

In other games with consequence to the finals spots, Box Hill restricted Croydon to 188 and Noble Park piled on 269 in its clash with Coburg.
