It’s unlikely Cameron Clayton’s knock will be forgotten anytime soon at Lower Eltham.

On the hottest day of the Diamond Valley Cricket Association season so far, the Kangas’ opener batted from start to finish on day one of his side’s Money Shield clash with Montmorency.

By the end of play, Clayton reached 153 runs in an innings which included 13 boundaries and 4 sixes.

Lower Eltham made 8-249 from its 80 overs with Mathew Salvatore’s 21 runs the next best score for the home side.

The club’s director of coaching John Bubis said it was one of the best innings he had seen during his time involved with the game.

“It was fantastic to watch, I don’t think I’ve seen many better in about 40 years,” he said.

“He played the powerful shots when he needed to and knocked it around the ground at different times. The ball went to all parts of the ground.

“It’s an incredible display to be out there in those conditions. He’s already putting together an incredible season.”

Through four innings this season, Clayton already has 335 runs at an average of 167.5.

He has only been dismissed once.

“When we were planning the season, we didn’t think he’d open in the two-day games but his form from the one-dayers warranted the opportunity,” Bubis said.

“Cam was the coach last season but had to stand down prior to this year. He actually batted in the lower order last season but we thought there was more of an opportunity up the order and he has grabbed it with both hands.

“Having less pressure without the coaching responsibilities has allowed him to play some fantastic cricket.”

Montmorency will look to chase down its total of 250 on Saturday.

John Kulikowski led the way with the ball for the visitors with 4-111 from 32 overs.
