Big V Basketball: Maria Steen Jespersen, Ida Andersson thrive for Sunbury

Sunbury’s Scandinavian import duo look set to take Big V Basketball by storm after a stunning first appearance together. Here’s what to expect.

Watch out.

Big V Basketball has a new dynamic duo in the form of Sunbury Jets stars Ida Andersson and Maria Steen Jespersen.

The latter made her debut at the weekend in a dominant display with 33 points on 16-22 shooting, 12 rebounds and eight assists in a 106-73 win over Hume.

Meanwhile, Andersson continued her sensational form with 34 points and six assists.

Jets coach Ben Draper said he couldn’t have asked for a better impact from Danish international Jespersen.

He said she was meant to be her debut a week earlier but her clearance had yet to go through.

“Maria is going to be a terrific acquisition for our team,” he said.

“Ida knew her because they’ve played together in Europe and she came to me and said you need to look at her game tape. And after watching it I knew we needed to sign her straight away.

“We announced Maria’s signing at the end of March but she needed a bit of a break after a longer season in Spain.

“We had been waiting for her to get here and I don’t think we could have asked for a better start.”

Meanwhile, Andersson is the Big V Championship Women’s division leading scorer after seven rounds having averaged 23.6 points and five assists.

Draper said he couldn’t have asked for a better impact from his star import.

“She has been great and having another scoring option in Maria is only going to help her out,” he said.

“The girls have provided so much more value to the team than on the court.

“I couldn’t ask for two better imports.”

After recording its third win of the season at the weekend, Sunbury now sits sixth on the ladder just outside the top four with a game in hand on fourth place Chelsea.

They’ll host Southern Peninsula on Saturday night.

“Hopefully we can fly up the ladder in the coming weeks,” Draper said.

Alex Watkins and Nicole Cameron who are both currently on the sidelines due to injury are expected to return in the coming weeks.
