A young revhead guilty of a third high-speed offence in three years has avoided a conviction after convincing a magistrate that he had learnt his lesson.
Taner Mehmet was busted driving at almost 90km/h above the speed limit when he was stopped by police in Barrymore Rd, Greenvale just after 1pm on July 7.
He pleaded guilty in Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on October 31.
Police prosecutor First Constable Abdul Fakhouri told the court Mehmet’s Ford sedan was clocked at 147km/h in a 60km/h zone.
First Constable Fakhouri said he was caught near a popular recreation and basketball centre, skate park and pedestrian crossing.
The court heard Mehmet had two prior speeding offences of similar speeds from 2017.
Mehmet, who has since sold the high-performance Ford, completed a road trauma awareness program in the lead-up to his court appearance.
When asked by Magistrate Carolyn Burnside what he had learnt, Mehmet told the court: “that your actions in the moment may seem harmless … but they have a great effect on the people around you”.
Mehmet’s defence lawyer asked Ms Burnside if he could be spared a conviction.

Ms Burnside said his actions were foolish and he really needed to do the road trauma course as she would have ordered it otherwise.
“I’m satisfied he’s learnt a valuable lesson,” she said.
“(Sometimes there’s) an irresistible temptation to put the foot down.”
Mehmet’s licence was disqualified for 12 months and he was ordered to donate $250 to animal charity Edgar’s Mission.
His Ford sedan was also impounded for 30 days after the incident.
