More than 80g of methamphetamine has allegedly been found inside the South Morang home where a toddler and a preschooler lived.

Jake Davis has allegedly been selling the drug out of the house, doing a drug deal via the mailbox.

He fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, July 29, to apply for bail, having been in custody since his home was raided about 8.40am on Tuesday, July 28.

The court heard police allegedly found more than 80 grams of methamphetamine — more than 26 times the trafficable quantity of the drug — between multiple bags in his bedroom, as well as $80 cash.

Davis lives in the house with his parents, girlfriend and two children, aged 19 months and four.

He allegedly then gave police two incorrect codes to his phone, causing the device to lock itself.

The court heard police allegedly found Davis was drug dealing when they intercepted the phone of one of his clients on May 23.

Constable Shafeeg said police found a conversation on April 16 where the man asked Davis if he could buy drugs off him, before the pair allegedly had a detailed conversation about doing a drug deal through Davis’ mailbox.

Davis allegedly sent the man photos and CCTV footage of him leaving the drugs out.

On April 21 Davis allegedly texted the man offering him more drugs, providing a price list, offering a quarter bag for $3850.

The court heard when he was arrested Davis admitted to having about 5g of methamphetamine, but said the rest of the substance found was a dietary supplement.

Constable Shafeeg said police also charged Davis over an incident when police saw him driving fast through South Morang and entering a roundabout from the wrong side of the road about 1.32am on June 28.

Police tried to chase Davis, before he allegedly sped up and continued driving on the wrong side of the road and got away.

The car he’d been driving was then found parked in his driveway with the number plates removed.

Police told the court no bail conditions could alleviate their concerns about Davis.

They said it was a concern that the home of two young children was being used for drug dealing.

Davis’ lawyer said his client had significant mental health issues, for which he was taking antipsychotic medication and seeing various medial workers.

He said Davis’ mental health meant custody would be more onerous for him, and that he could continue to receive much better care in the community, where he could also continue his corrections order.

The lawyer said Davis’ supportive family would ensure he didn’t reoffend, and were willing to offer $5000 assurity to the court.

He said the charges would be contested, which meant Davis could be waiting in jail until next year for a court hearing due to the delays being imposed by COVID-19.

Magistrate Ian Alger agreed, granting him bail with strict conditions.

But he said jail would be the only option if Davis was found guilty of trafficking 80 grams of methamphetamine.
