Site investigations begin at Bell St, Preston level crossing

Planning works to remove four dangerous and congested level crossings in Preston are now underway ahead of a 2020 start date. But one community group is worried they’ll be left behind when it all kicks off.

Workers are moving in at the Bell St level crossing as planning for the long-awaited removal begins.

But concerned members of the community say while they are banging down the door to offer their opinions, they’re scared they won’t get the chance.

The Level Crossing Removal Project will use elevated rail to avoid the Oakover Rd, Bell St, Cramer St and Murray Rd crossings and build two new stations at Preston and Bell.

LXRP project director Michael Caink said workers were at Bell St, Preston to begin geotechnical investigations to help plan the project.

“We are still in the very early stages of planning the design and schedule of works to remove this congested level crossing — in conjunction with three others on the Mernda line,” Mr Caink said.

“We will be out in the community — talking with locals, getting their feedback and keeping them informed as we get on and deliver this vital project.”

Bell Residents Group spokesman Mitch Wall said the group had polled more than 100 households in the area to find out what they want.

It now waited on an opportunity to offer design feedback.

The poll found priorities included a safe and well-lit building, minimal noise and light emissions, no additional car spaces and maximised greenery and planting.

But Mr Wall said the group had yet to take part in community consultation and they wanted to get in early to help make the major decisions.
